The German Longhaired Pointer
Club of North America (GLPCNA) was founded in 2007. While
German Longhaired Pointers had been imported and hunted in North
America for over 50 years, the breed was still not gaining the
recognition among hunters that it deserved. In 2007, a core
group of 5 longhair owners started working together to form a new
breed club. The idea behind forming a new club was to place
emphasis on a versatile gundog that could excel in the variable
hunting conditions of North America. Also, the GLPCNA wanted
to explore what other countries had to offer. Up until this
point, a majority of the longhairs in North America were of German
descent. While members of the GLPCNA will continue to breed
German dogs, the club is also interested in infusing blood of
longhairs from other countries. We believe that longhairs
from around the world can contribute to the creation of the finest
versatile hunting dog in North America.
The GLPCNA has put some rigorous standards in place for breeding
German Longhaired Pointers. The breed is very talented today
because of the rigorous testing that it has experienced over its
100+ years of existence. We will carry on with that idea as
we breed today's longhairs. Besides high hunting testing
standards, the physical attributes of the dogs are also considered
very important. We want our breed to look and move like a
longhair when it is out in the field. |

| Finally, the GLPCNA places a large emphasis
on the temperament of every breeding dog. We have
the most comprehensive temperament testing system of any
breed in North America. The German Longhaired Pointer
is noted in historical books as well as modern
publications as having an extraordinarily even temperament. They are described as remaining calm
even during the most exciting part of a hunt or
test. Longhairs are supposed to be very laid-back,
easy to train gundogs. They are also supposed to
have an internal switch which enables them to go from
sitting calmly in the house to passionately hunting a
field in an instant. This unique breed trait is the
reason for the temperament rating system. The GLPCNA is striving to ensure that all
German Longhaired Pointers exhibit the calm, cooperative
disposition that the breed has been known to have for over
a century. |
